An Early Spring on Bylot Island
The research team returned to Bylot Island in mid-May for another season of monitoring snow goose nesting. This year is quite different from the past three seasons, with an early spring and a much faster snowmelt. By June 17, only 5% of snow remained on the ground.
Lemming populations, a key indicator of predation levels, are present this year. While the peak abundance near our main camp was slightly lower than expected, other areas across the plain showed strong signs of high lemming activity and many active Arctic fox dens.
Exceptionally High Nesting Density
Snow geese began nesting relatively early this season, with the second-highest nesting density ever recorded in our long-term study. The median laying date was June 9 — three days earlier than the long-term average. Both wetland and mesic habitats were used, with an impressive density of 3.7 nests per hectare (long-term average: 2.0).
Clutch Size & Nesting Success
Average clutch size is 3.7 eggs, consistent with the long-term mean. Predation appears low this year, with 86% nest success as of June 17, compared to the long-term average of 67%. The first eggs hatched on July 1, and hatching is now in full swing.
Our team continues to mark goslings and will have updated data on hatching and post-hatch survival after the August banding session. Current indicators suggest above-average productivity this fall. Great news for hunters ! Though challenges remain for young birds before reaching southern Quebec.

What This Means for Greater snow goose Hunting in 2025
All signs point to a strong snow goose migration and excellent hunting opportunities in Quebec this fall.
We still have prime dates available for snow goose hunting, including peak season at Lac-Saint-Jean ! One of Quebec’s best hunting regions.
